魏晋玄学从魏正始年间兴起,发展到西晋郭象的时代达到顶峰,此后,虽然那“煽于海内”的玄远清谈之风在东晋文人学者中仍竞相唱和,伹玄学的理论探索已走向下坡。与此蔚为对照,原来依附于道家学说乃至儒学的佛学思潮,则在东晋知识分子中逐渐流行起来,逃往江南的门阀士族、名士僧人一时间“竞读佛经”,借佛理释玄学,援玄学入佛学,玄学的衰落与佛学的兴盛成为思想界无可扭转的趋势。从玄远向释空的转换与发展,成为魏晋玄学在东晋时期的基本趋向。认真析理这一过程的由来与嬗变,对于总结学术思想的发展规律与经验教训,研究不同文化系统的渗透与融合,都是颇有意义的。
