The Summer Palace is an imperial garden known both at home and abroad. Its predecessor was Qingyi Garden in Beijing Sanshanwuyuan. It was severely damaged when the British and French allied forces burned the Yuanmingyuan. Fourteen years of Guangxu (1888), Cixi used naval military funds to repair the park. It was renamed the Summer Palace. In 1900, the Summer Palace was again ransacked by the Eight-Power Allied Forces. Cixi returned to Beijing from Xi’an and again used huge sums to repair the park.
