Many sources of magnetic minerals are thought to be potential contributors to magnetic recording in lakes and oceanic sediments. Based on our current understanding of these sources and their properties, we propose a model that can indicate those depositional environments where a particular source of magnetic minerals may affect magnetic recording. Authigenic magnetic minerals can only be found in estuaries and zoophobes, and cosmic sedimentation, aeolian sedimentation and magnetic bacteria may be important in low sedimentation rate oceanic sediments. Substances from the catchment may only be the only source of high rate of sedimentation and low productivity magnetic recording of lakes, and fly ash may only be the main source of magnetic recording in lakes and oceanic sediments with extremely low sedimentation rates.
