In the Madre de Dios region of Peru, the past 15 years have witnessed an unprecedented gold fever. From 1999 to 2012, small-sized gold mines in the region have increased six-fold, and the area of land requisitioned for gold mining has more than quadrupled from 13 years ago. This leads to serious deforestation, soil erosion and mercury pollution. Some researchers estimate that the problem of mercury pollution left behind by the Gold Rush in California in the 19th century may take up to 10,000 years to eliminate, and such a massive gold rush in the Madre de Dios region could have far-reaching consequences.
