【Abstract】The research is based on PACTE’s translation competence model and the knowledge spiral module to probe possible solutions to translation students’ weak translation competence at SFLC.A proposition is made at the conclusion part for future research.
【Key Words】translation competence; knowledge creation
Translation Competence
The notion of translation competence mainly goes to two directions: the linguistic competence and the social competence. There is a various definition about translation competence. While the PACTE group considers translation competence as “the underlying system of knowledge needed to translate. It includes declarative and procedural knowledge, but the procedural knowledge is predominant. It is made up of five sub-competencies (bilingual, extra-linguistic, knowledge about translation, instrumental and strategic) and it activates a series of psycho-physiological mechanisms” (PACTE, 2003:16).
Knowledge Management Theories
In The Knowledge Creating Company, Nonaka and Takeuchi elaborate on the two types of knowledge, namely tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge:“tacit knowledge is personal, context-specific, and therefore hard to formalize and communicate”, while explicit knowledge is “transmittable in formal, systematic language” (59).What’s more knowledge creation has two dimensions---epistemological and ontological, and the key of knowledge creation lies in the interaction between tacit and explicit knowledge: socialization, externalization, combination and internalization.Based on the knowledge creation spiral model, the paper is going to focus on the knowledge creation at School of Foreign Languages
