The Richard Nixon Library chose today to open an exhibit[展览] on one of the most incongruous[不协调的] meetings in history ?Nixon and Presley注1 together in the Oval Office in 1970. Elvis just showed up at the White House unannounced[未经宣布的], said he wanted to see the President. Bud Crowe, a Nixon assistant, was told Elvis was outside the gates.
Crowe: Dwight Chapin called up and said, “The King注2 is here!?And I looked at the President’s schedule[时间表], I said, “Well, there’re no kings on the president’s schedule.?He says, “It’s not any two-bit[微不足道的] king, The King, Elvis!?So, they brought him in. Elvis wanted to be made a “Federal Agent-at-Large?fighting drugs. “I have done an in-depth study of drug abuse[滥用],?he wrote to the President. No one knew until a year later the meeting took place, and the big mystery to some of us has always been, how did they keep (secret)注3 the fact that a guy, with a limousine[豪华轿车] longer than a basketball court, wearing four-inch sideburns[鬓脚], tight-fitting dark velvet[天鹅绒的] pants, a white silky shirt open below his chest, a dark purple velvet cape[披肩], sunglasses with “EP”in silver on the nose bridge[鼻梁], and a diamond and gold belt buckle[皮带扣环] probably worth more than the President’s salary, a secret. And, by the way, the picture of Presley and the President is the most requested document from the National Archives in Washington. Go figure注4!
