The Buraydah is like the Land of Oz.Cut off from all else by endless sand,this oasis in the vast,dry wilderness of central Saudi Arabia was once a five-day camel ride from the cities of the coast,Jeddah on the Red Sea and Dhahran1 on the Persian Gulf.Even in this modern age with paved roads and an airport,the remote Buraydah conjures a feeling of mystery,and perhaps a tinge of2 fear—fear of the unknown.Which is why,when Yasmeen invited me there,I agreed to go.
