[British Journal of the Institute of Nuclear Engineers, published in the February/February 1980 issue, reports that the Pacific Northwest Institute of the US Department of Energy is developing a plan to study an advanced radioactive source of radioactive cesium (90Sr). The main goal of this work is to effectively and safely use sealed tantalum fluoride in the application of radioisotope generators. The yttrium-90 is a by-product of the nuclear fuel cycle and can be obtained from irradiated fuel produced by Hanford’s military production reactors. The ~(90)Sr is purified and then converted to cesium fluoride, which can be used as a source of heat for power generation in remote areas such as unattended installations, signals, and weather stations.
