Objective To investigate and evaluate the tidal flat environment in Ningbo and the contents of heavy metals and polychlorinated biphenyls in their marine products. Methods Six monitoring points were randomly selected to collect and test the contents of heavy metals and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in mudflats, seawater and seafood samples of tidal flats and evaluated according to relevant national standards. Results Except for lead in seawater, the contents of lead, cadmium, PCBs in sea mud and the cadmium content in seawater were all in accordance with the national standards of aquaculture area. The qualified rate of lead in sea melon seeds was 95.15% based on the “limit of contaminants in food”, and the pass rates of cadmium in blue crab, razor clam, sea melon and mud snail were 4.55%, 89.02%, 53.05% and 12.88, respectively %. There was a significant positive correlation between lead content in sea melon seeds and lead content in sea mud, and there was a significant positive correlation between cadmium content in mud and crabs. Conclusion The beach environment and the heavy metal pollution of seafood in the area of Ningbo deserve attention. Shells molluscs can be used as an indicator organism for the monitoring of heavy metal pollution in coastal waters.
