Objective To test the status of lead content and excessive lead in Shenzhen foodstuffs. To investigate the relationship between food consumption habits and lead intake in Shenzhen. The Comprehensive Poll Index (CPI) was used to evaluate the influence of food contaminants on residents’ health. Methods The lead content of 2 81 5 commercial products in 8 categories in Shenzhen from 1999 to 2001 was tested, and the lead exceeded the standard of all kinds of food. A random survey of the food composition of 532 residents, the establishment of CPI assessment of residents of food composition and the inherent linkages of lead contamination of foodstuffs. Results Among the 8 types of food, the average lead exceeded 1 39% and the lead exceeded 0 1 9% ~ 6 50%. The CPI of lead was between 0 1 5 and 3 77, the CPI value of food with high lead over standard rate and high household consumption frequency was large, and the food CPI value of low food consumption rate of residents with low over standard rate was small. Conclusion There is a certain degree of lead pollution in Shenzhen food for sale. CPI can effectively assess the impact of food contaminants on the health of residents
