This paper describes a promising non-contact optical method for measuring surface roughness in machining, which includes: reflected light position detection, focus error detection, optical fiber method and optical lever method. The results measured with these methods are in good agreement with those measured with a mechanical profilometer. However, fine iron filings, cutting fluids and vibrations of the machine prevent the accuracy or feasibility of the measurement in machining.
