In Canada, nine factories produce high-yield pulp, which mainly produces BCTMP from hardwood and spruce with a total capacity of about 2.2 million t / a. The water consumption at these plants is quite low, with two of the plants achieving zero emissions. Wastewater discharged from the factory has a high concentration of extractives and chemical oxygen demand and is difficult to be biologically treated. This poses difficulties for various biochemical treatment methods, including activated sludge treatment, anaerobic treatment and the latest biological Membrane activated sludge method. This paper reviews the characteristics of high-yield pulping wastewater and its biological treatment technology.
