毛姆(1874—1965)是当代著名的英国作家。他在一生中发表过一百二十二篇短篇小说,素以诱人的悬念、意外的结局和含蓄而幽默的笔法著称于世。这里介绍的《全懂先生》,正是一篇典型的毛姆式的小说。毛姆曾坦率地指出:“作家的骰子总是装了铅的,但是决不能让读者看出来。”(《论小说写作》,《世界文学》1981年第3期,235页)基于这样的原则,他常常喜欢隐藏起真正的创作意图,首先把读者引入一个由他来支配的迷宫。只有当读者完全上了他的圈套以后,他才肯解开悬念、展示结局,使你感到迷宫里别有一番天地。《全懂先生》也是这样。小说一开始,作者就以一种不假掩饰的厌恶之情推出
Maugham (1874-1965) is a famous contemporary English writer. He published 122 short stories throughout his life, known for his seductive suspense, unexpected ending and implicit and humorous writing. Introduced here, “all understand Mr.”, it is a typical Maugham novel. Maugham frankly pointed out: “Writers’ dice are always loaded with lead, but they must not be read by readers.” (On Novel Writing, World Literature, 1981, No.3, p.235) Principle, he often likes to hide the true intention of creation, first of all, the reader into a domination by him.
