The Irish novelist Frank O’Connor created the Realistic Novels “Guests of the Nation,” set against the backdrop of the British-European war of 1919-1921. In his novels, O’Connor has created a series of characters at the bottom of wartime society through straightforward and meticulous portrayals of characters from different perspectives such as language, psychology and behavior. This clearly shows his attitude toward the war: the war is cruel and absurd by its nature, and all the belligerents are the victims of the war.
