Objective: To determine and compare the in vitro antibacterial activity of two drugs for the prevention of neonatal ophthalmia. Methods: The minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration were determined by double dilution method of broth. Results: The MIC50 of silver nitrate eye drops on S. aureus, pneumococcus and Neisseria gonorrhoeae were less than 4 ~ 8μg · ml-1 and 8 ~ 32μg · ml-1 for MBC90, respectively. Povidone The iodine eye drops had MIC50 of 64 ~ 256μg · ml-1 and MBC90 of 512μg · ml-1. CONCLUSION: Silver nitrate eye drops and povidone-iodine eye drops have antibacterial and bacteriostatic effects on the common pathogens of neonatal ophthalmia, but the effect of silver nitrate is stronger
