Objective To investigate the effects of propofol and ketamine on the activity of Na + and K + -ATPase in synaptic regions of different brain regions in rats. Methods SD rats were randomly divided into three groups with 10 rats in each group, ip saline 10ml / kg (control group), propofol 100mg / kg or ketamine 100mg / kg respectively. The activity of Na +, K + -ATPase in cerebral cortex, hippocampus and brainstem synaptosomes was measured by spectrophotometry. Results Compared with the control group, propofol significantly inhibited the activity of Na +, K + -ATPase in synaptosomes of cerebral cortex, hippocampus and brainstem (P <0.01). Ketamine significantly decreased the levels of Na +, K + -ATPase activity (P <0.01), but had no effect on Na +, K + -ATPase activity in hippocampal synaptosomes (P <0.01). Conclusion The general anesthetic effects of propofol and ketamine may be related to the inhibition of Na +, K + -ATPase activity in brain synaptosome
