In the 1870s, the American novelist Brett Hart became famous for his narrative poem “Pagan Chinese.” In the poem, the image of “pagan Chinese” Ashin was widely circulated and won after being misunderstood by his readers, and played a role in fueling the subsequent Chinese movement. The analysis of the images of Chinese in the poem and their misunderstanding helps us to understand the image of the Chinese people in the era of extreme Chinese exclusion and the negative impact of literature after being misinterpreted by the political and social groups. This is of practical significance.
