The incidence of colon cancer in Swedish 80-year-olds is 10 times higher than that in the 50-year-olds, but this cannot be explained solely by the increase in older members. The authors investigated 449 men and 524 women born in 1901, 48 men and 115 women who had had surgery for gallbladder disease at the age of 70, and 13 women undergoing cholecystectomy from 1958 to 1978. The patient and 12 male patients developed cancer. Of the 115 female patients who underwent cholecystectomy, 4 were colon cancer-caused cases; 1 out of 48 male patients and 7 out of 409 women without surgery. The incidence of colorectal cancer in women with cholecystectomy was significantly higher than that in non-surgical patients (P < 0.025). In men, there was no difference between surgery and non-surgery.
