Background Several recent surveys have investigated the prevalence of serums of Trypanosoma cruzi in highly dangerous blood donors, but few data are available on low-risk donors. The purpose of this study was to assess the seroprevalence of cruzi trypanosomiasis in a low-infection donor population. Study Design and Disinfection During the 10-month period, the blood samples from all blood donors of the Red Cross Society of the Southwestern United States were tested for enzyme-labeled Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies. The results were confirmed by radioimmunoprecipitation. To provide medical advice to confirmed seropositive donors and to begin a retrospective survey of repeat donors. A total of 18,089 blood donations were tested. 150 cases had repeated reactions, and 3 cases (0.003%) of Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies were confirmed as positive. The three seropositive blood donors came from the Waw area in Texas, estimating the area
