闻一多早就被称为集诗人、学者、斗士三重人格于一身的人物.作为诗人,他以《红烛》《死水》等著名诗集确立了自己在现代诗歌史上的重要地位.作为斗士,他以自己的生命在现代民主运动史上写上了光辉的一页.毫无疑问,作为学者,他也得到了社会的普遍认同.但究竟如何认识和评价这位学者,他是否也像他在现代诗歌史上、民主运动史上的地位那样,也在现代学术史上占有重要的地位?这个问题,直到目前仍然是研究得不够不充分的.新编12卷本的《闻一多全集》的出版,为认识和评价学者闻一多提供了更多的信息,使我们有充足的理由作出这样的判断:在中国现代学术上,闻一多是个博通古今中外、才华横溢、见解独特、成就卓著、影响巨大的杰出学者.他以中国古代文学为研究中心,而又眼光辐射整个传统文化;他以中国传统学问为根基,而又大力汲收西方现代科学理论和方法;他治学态度严谨,实事求是,而又曾于创造性思维,勇于提出并证成种种假设;他长期在“故纸堆”中生活,而又将历史与现实沟通,有浓厚的忧患意识、强烈的使命感和为真理献身的大无畏斗争精神.他是以自己的特殊学术个性和贡献研身于屈指可数的近代大学者之列的人物.
