This paper discusses the Confucian understanding of moral root or base by interpreting the dialog in the Analects of Confucius 17-21. Following the clue hidden in its hermeneutic history, the author discloses the significance of the funeral for embodying filial piety and its role in the Confucian moral system, analyses further the function and limitation of moral feeling (xin an) in moral life, and tries to put forward a new idea of the relationship between feeling (xin) and reason (li) in moral life. This standpoint of interpreting is not scriptural but philosophical.
