This year’s G20 Summit will take place in Hamburg, Germany’s largest port city, on July 7-8. The meeting’s theme, “ shaping an interconnected world,” coincides with the objective of strengthening interconnectivity under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.
Globalization has become the norm in modern times, and communication and integration between different nations are underlying international themes. Never before have people been so closely intertwined as to become a community of shared destiny. Interconnectivity represents the aspirations of a majority of people worldwide.
In the era of globalization, only openness, communication, inclusiveness and mutual learning can promote a nation’s progress. Nations that close themselves to the outside world and are reluctant to learn from and communicate with others will be unable to make progress.
However, the resurgence of trade protectionism in recent years has cast a shadow over international cooperation. For instance, the communiqué released at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Baden-Baden, Germany, on March 18 omitted the wording “anti-trade protectionism.” Under such circumstances, promoting interconnectivity has become even more urgent.
China and Germany—the world’s second and fourth largest economies, respectively, and both important G20 members—strongly support an open global economy and a multilateral trade system, and oppose trade protectionism and narrow nationalism. The two governments have made great strides in promoting policy coordination, connectivity of infrastructure and facilities, unimpeded trade, financial integration and strengthened people-to-people ties.
During an official visit to Germany from May 31 to June 1, Premier Li Keqiang reached a series of new agreements on furthering and expanding the Sino-German comprehensive strategic partnership with his German counterpart, Angela Merkel, and the two sides signed a number of deals in the fi elds of aerospace, fi nance, new energy vehicles and artifi cial intelligence.
President Xi Jinping will attend the Hamburg Summit. China hopes the summit will send a clear signal of the intent to build an open world economy, safeguard the free trade system and guide globalization to become fairer and benefi cial for all parties.
The G20 Summit will deal with a number of topics of global significance such as climate change, sustainable development and the Syrian refugee crisis. “Shaping an interconnected world” can be an effective strategy for addressing the numerous social and economic problems plaguing the world at present because it necessitates close collaboration and solidarity between people in the face of diffi culties.
