The novel depicts the two main characters, Peter and Agnes. They are descendants of immigrants. Although they have lived through the arduous pioneering years of their ancestors, they still have to go through long struggles and hard struggles to become upper-class. The prejudices of Yan, status, and wealth are still coming down in this new continent. The author’s portrayals of Peter and Agnes are profound and subtle, and she reveals their complex state of mind, their ideals and their disillusionment through the environment in which they live and the people around them. The novel does not have twists and turns, fascinating plot, the story is plain, but in dull let us see this society in one aspect of life in the petty bourgeoisie.
