Q: People tend to increase fluid intake for patients with urinary tract infections. This increases the amount of urine and the frequency of urination, which appears to be reasonable to improve the symptoms. Is there any evidence that it is helpful to increase fluid intake when urinary tract infections such as antibiotics are appropriate? A: Physicians often urge patients with urinary tract infections to drink more water. Water dilution can “flush” the urinary tract of infectious bacteria, and frequent urination bacteria can reduce the growth within the bladder. However, an increase in the elderly, especially in chronic conditions, leads to clinical hyponatremia. Therefore, it is necessary to re-evaluate this treatment.
