The Royal Navy won a new type of remote controlled contactless mine clearance system (RIMS) by bidding for a 12-month feasibility study that will determine the specific requirements of the project. The RIMS system is expected to be in service in 2005 (based on the feasibility study). The current plan calls for ordering four systems, each of which may consist of four independent remote dinghies equipped with acoustic and magnetic mine-clearing devices. In the original plan, the RMIS control system will be used on Hunter class anti-ship mines. However, their control systems are also required to have sufficient flexibility to be used on other platforms as necessary. Feasibility of the tender set in 1998 July opening.
