刘勰运用诗化的语言对“隐秀”进行了描述性的界定,从而使这一概念具有多角度阐释的可能性。在创作论中,“隐”、“秀”分别是对创作原则和表现手法的要求;在作品论中,具有“隐”的美学特征的作品有多层含义,显得空灵,有深度,具有“秀”的美学特征的作品有波澜,显得亮丽而光彩;在鉴赏论中,“隐”是读者追寻的意义空白,“秀”是使读者惊醒、感奋的美丽诗句。从文化语境来看,“隐”是儒家温柔敦厚诗教观念的体现,“秀”是魏晋以来追求语言形式之美的时代精神的体现。
