Since the New Culture Movement, there have been various approaches to understanding cultural differences between China and the West such as evolutionism and cultural ontology. However, this issue can be most clearly explained only with the knowledge tools of the Marxist mode of production. This paper argues that the fundamental reason for the cultural differences between China and the West lies in the difference between the commodity economy in ancient Greece and the peasant economy in China. So far, the basic categories of cultural differences between East and West have been found in most of these differences.
