In the mid-1950s, 36 B-50Ds were demolished and converted into long-range meteorological reconnaissance aircraft. The aircraft’s equipment was able to collect air samples at high altitudes. The aircraft was equipped with Doppler radar and weather radar, The bomb bay was replaced by a large fuel tank, the WB-50D, to replace the WB-29. However, the modification was not delivered to the Boeing B-50 factory, but to Lockheed aircraft company, Lockheed for its installation of APM-82 automatic navigation device, ANQ-7 temperature and humidity measuring instrument, and Flight instrumentation systems have been strengthened. The first converted WB-50D flew its first flight on August 20, 1955 and was delivered to the Air Forces in November.
