古籍版式是古籍樣式中最爲直觀的表徵,可以用作鑒定的依據,魚尾即其中細微的一點。在《四庫全書總目》中,四庫館臣曾提到墨蓋與魚尾的問題,並以此作爲版本鑒定的一個小細節:大德本(宋唐慎微《證類本草三十卷》)于朱書、墨蓋(案:原本每條稱墨蓋以下爲愼微所續,其式如今刻工所稱之魚尾)較爲分明。泰和本則多與條例不相應,然刊刻清整,首末序跋完具~①。在四庫館臣看來“墨蓋”即“魚尾”。此四庫館臣之按語至少可以説明:
