In modern times, the construction of Shanghai’s urban physical space has greatly changed the traditional landscape of water and land in the area. In particular, the expansion of the urban road network has resulted in the rapid deterioration of the original riverbank system and the subsequent emergence of a series of natural environment and social problems . In this process of urbanization, the evolution of the natural environment gradually became intense after 1900, but so far no result has scientifically restored or resolved this remarkable process. This article uses the method of combining GIS with the research of historical documents to try to recover the specific process of the landscape transformation in Shanghai Water and Town from 1900 to 1949 microscopically and make a comprehensive analysis of its internal driving mechanism and social response.
