我国著名摄影师、电影机械专家吴蔚云,是江苏省吴县人,1907年出生于上海一个贫穷教师家庭,因生活所迫,他仅读书二年就到石印局学绘石。绘石是一种古老的版画石印制版工艺。由于他勤奋好学,长进很快,十九岁时,便考进上海天一影片公司,开始其摄影生涯。在旧社会那“教会徒弟,饿死师傅”的情况下,要想学点技艺是十分难的。尤其当时的天一电影公司的摄影师是一位外国人,他根本瞧不起中国的小学徒,从不让摸机器,吴蔚云名义上是学摄影,实际上尽让他干洗片、印片等杂活。但吴蔚云年少好强,为了学到本事,他从不放过任何一个细心观察的机会,把看到的各种拍摄方法暗暗记在小本子上,并且把外国摄影师丢弃的片头拾掇起来,用作暗里学习拍摄的材料——他常常和管机器的师兄约好,趁深夜或凌晨摄影机空闲时去偷偷苦练。这样,日复一日,直到他完全掌握了手摇摄影机的基本功,用拾掇的片头拍出的一些画面得到了老板赞赏,才被允许上机拍片。从此,吴蔚云先后在《天一》、《明星》等公司拍摄了近三十部影片。其中比较成熟的作品有《小女 Wu Weiyun, a famous photographer and film mechanical expert in China, was born in Wuxian, Jiangsu Province.
