A new type of molecular block compound was synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of a linear aromatic dicarboxylic acid with an orthophenanthroline copper salt. The molecular block was self-assembled by the aromatic pp-recognition of an orthophenanthroline ligand located at an obtuse angle In the first case, a two-dimensional polyrotaxane is formed by the self-assembly of diamond-shaped molecular blocks. This two-dimensional layered structure forms a three-dimensional network structure with a unique topological structure by aromatic pp-stacking of phenanthroline ligands.
