汽车的始祖首次出现于中国 康熙十七～十八年(1678～1679年)间,在钦天监供职的比利时人,耶苏会教士南怀仁:(Ferdinand Verbiest,1623～1688年)在北京试制过一台布兰卡(Branca)蒸汽轮驱动的四轮车,车长约60cm。由此看来,是一种模型车辆,未有实际用途。但这是世界上最早的蒸气汽车雏型。按刘仙洲氏及国外人士考证,认为系汽车之始祖。
