Ketamine has been shown to induce a significant amount of neuronal apoptosis in the rapidly developing brain of rodents resulting in cognitive dysfunction through a variety of animal behavioral testing methods. Its functional impairment is manifested in many aspects such as spatial cognitive ability, learning and memory ability. However, it has not been confirmed clinically that the impact of ketamine on brain development has become the focus of current research. The elucidation of its mechanism may be instructive for rational use of neonatal anesthesia dosage and the development of new drugs.
