Cognitive linguistics holds that metaphor as a cognitive tool expresses different people’s understanding of abstract concepts. In English and Chinese poetry, the poet gets many common conceptual metaphors of “death” based on his own knowledge and experience such as “Death is the end of the journey of life” “Death is sleep / rest” Material and vessel separation “” Death is a fall “. These conceptual metaphors reflect the similarities and differences between the English and Chinese poets in the abstract concept of ”death“. However, due to differences in geographical environment, religious beliefs, political system and social and historical development, there is also a great cognitive difference between ”death“ and ”death“ in Chinese and Western poetry. For example, ”death in Chinese poetry embodies the notion of human inequality “; ” The attitude toward the soul and the difference of whereabouts after the death reflects the difference between the religious views of England and China ".
