It is thought that proteins encoded by ras oncogenes can cause the expression of certain types of cancer cell transformed phenotypes. The ras protein family consists of several members, including normal (protooncogene) and mutated (oncogene) forms in human cells. It is generally believed that proto-oncogenes are involved in the control of normal cell growth; while the mutated forms (apparently due to somatic mutation in the normal ras gene) appear to be partially associated with normal growth.
