The United States has done a great deal of work on the treatment and utilization of waste water in arid western areas and they have much experience to learn from. Wastewater treatment in California, USA, on the one hand, is to make up for the shortage of water resources and to meet the needs of environmental protection on the other hand. According to the information from 1977, California needed 38 billion cubic meters of water for farming, agriculture and domestic use. About 3.46 billion cubic meters of water was purchased from the rest of the world or from over-exploitation of groundwater. California’s water deficit is expected to increase to 5.68 billion cubic meters per year by the year 2000. In 1980, California converted and utilized a total of 2.19 billion cubic meters of sewage per year. It plans to transform and use 3.15 billion cubic meters a year in 2000. This is a very impressive water resource. It is common in southern California
