After a two-year embargo, Japan opened the door to France in January 2003, allowing French pork to be exported to Japan. Due to foot-and-mouth disease, Japan closed its port in March 2001 and later tightened Japan’s trade with French pork because of the outbreak of swine fever in the Moselle region of France in April 2002. After the French authorities reached a trade export agreement with Japan, pig owners and slaughtering plants in France were greatly encouraged, especially in the Bretagne region, which occupies 57% of the country’s pork production. Before the embargo, Japan was the largest exporter of French pork and in 2000 alone, Japan imported 23,500 tons of French pork. Under the conditions of exporters gaining high profits, the quality of pork in Japan is also very high. This has greatly increased the confidence of exporters, and some even dream that in the next two years Japan is expected to import 50,000 tons of French pork.
