The change of the contemporary public memorial sculptures in China is closely related to the changes in ideology and cultural forms since the founding of the People’s Republic. In the 1950s and 1960s, the public memorial sculptures, themes and the relationship with the environment followed certain rules and defined social functions. The creation of the commemorative sculpture in the 1980s has gained a lot of room for selection and creation. At the same time, there have also been issues such as one-sided attention to formal sense, work-style modification, blunt use of modern vocabulary. In the 1990s, China experienced profound changes in social transformation. The urban cultural ecology presented as a multi-dimensional landscape of interlacing, interaction and coexistence. The memorial sculpture is faced with the problem of how to coordinate the relationship with the environment. Pay attention to the reality and grasp the development trend and characteristics of contemporary culture and spirit so that the commemorative sculpture forms the interaction with social politics, culture and economy in the process of promoting the mainstream values of the society. This is the direction for the development of public memorial sculpture.
