Olia: Roger? Roger, is that you?
Roger: Olia! Wow, long time no see!
Olia: Right back at you. It’s been, what, five years?
Roger: 1)Creeping up on ten actually.
  Olia: That long?
  Roger: Yup. Crazy, eh?
Olia: You can say that again. So what have you been up to? Roger: Well, after graduation I sort of 2)bounced around for a bit and now I’m working for the city as a civil engineer. How about you?
Olia: I went to Holland straight after graduation. I sort of 3)muscled my way into an environmental research firm out there as an intern.
  Roger: And now?
Olia: The hard work paid off. I’m a project leader for an environmental assessment firm that works internationally and consults on major development sites.
Roger: Olia, that’s amazing! ①Smooth sailing since graduation.
Olia: ②Oh I wouldn’t say that. ③I’ve definitely hit some rough weather along the way, but I always had a goal in mind, ④so when push came to shove I was always able to paddle my own 4)canoe.
Roger: Wow, I really wish I had that kind of drive. Honestly, ⑤I’ve barely been keeping my head above water.
Olia: I guess it’s just that ever since I was 5)knee-high to a grasshopper my mom 6)hammered in the importance of making a game plan.
  Roger: How does that work?
Olia: It’s about making goals that are specific and achievable. In this case it’s about career planning. Do you have any goals?
Roger: Not really. It always seemed kind of silly to write down that kind of stuff.
Olia: It’s all 7)part and parcel of the career path.
  Roger: You think so?
Olia: ⑥Is the Pope Catholic? Of course I think so!
Roger: I guess I just wouldn’t know where to start.
Olia: Have you got some time now?
  Roger: Like, now now?
Olia: Sure, why not? I’m here, you’re here, you can pick my brain, and ⑦I can get you to pick up the lunch 8)tab.
  Roger: Alright, you’re on!

① Smooth sailing since graduation.
smooth sailing: a situation where progress is made without any difficulty(一帆风顺,轻而易举的事)。例如:Working there was not all smooth sailing. The boss had a very bad temper.
  ② Oh I wouldn’t say that.
I wouldn’t say that: a polite way to disagree with what the other just said(委婉地对他人的话表示反对)。例如:
—I heard that Jack really screwed up the interview yesterday.
  —I wouldn’t say that.
③ I’ve definitely hit some rough weather along the way.
hit rough weather: experience difficulties or problems(遭遇困难)。例如:
Our company has hit rough weather since the death of its founder.
④ So when push came to shove I was always able to paddle my own canoe.
when push comes to shove: when the situation gets more critical or intense(在紧要关头,在紧急时刻)。例如:
When push comes to shove, you know I’ll be on your side.
paddle one’s canoe: do sth. by oneself; be independent(靠自己的力量,自力更生)。例如:
I’m sure together we can paddle our own canoe at this difficult time.
⑤ I’ve barely been keeping my head above water.
keep one’s head above water: manage to survive(使自己免于麻烦,凑合)。例如:We have so many orders that we can hardly keep our heads above water.
⑥ Is the Pope Catholic?
Is the Pope Catholic?: used to say that the answer to a question you have just been asked is obviously “yes;” a jokey rhetorical question(用以表示对提出问题的答案显然是肯定的、滑稽的反问语。
—Do you want to work on the new project?
  —Is the Pope Catholic?
⑦ I can get you to pick up the lunch tab.
pick up the tab: pay the bill for sth.(付账)。例如:
The company will pick up the tab for the Mid-Autumn Festival dinner for employees’ family members.
