障壁画作为日本特有的壁画,在桃山时代(1575—1614年)最精彩、最发达,有许多优秀作品幸存至今。 障壁画的历史很悠久,最迟也可上朔到平安时代(794—1192年)初期。至于奈良时代(710—784年)及其以前的障壁画的情况,我们还不知道。当然屏风画、冲立画之类在奈良时代就已流行,这已被文字记载和实物遗迹两方面所证实,可是作为建筑上的障壁画,它的历史大概是从平安时代开始的吧。障壁画与当时划时代发展的宫殿贵族府邸等建筑相联系,由此可见它盛行的原因。它的产生还可能与中国唐代宫殿府邸里都画壁画的风气传入日本有关,所以说
