On The Reform of College English Teaching

  【Abstract】In college English teaching,teaching method is playing more and more important role.How can we raising learner’s awareness and help teachers choose the better way to do their job effectively are discussed.
  【Key words】English teaching; Learning Orientation; Memory Laws
  An investigation of citizens,which was taken at the end of 2013 shows that the biggest hotspot for Chinese family to invest in at present is education.AS a college English teacher,we must face the fact that students are on different levels.How can we teach them in class effectively?
  Firstly,we should know the students’ psychological characteristics,physiological characteristics,memory laws and learning orientation.(Ⅰ)Psychological Characteristics.Students,even college students usually have a keen feeling for new things,which could arouse their strong curiosity.If teachers are good at designing games with new knowledge,competition will turn up during playing games.Students must have a strong desire to win and when they win,they will feel successful and then hope to get others’ recognition and praise.In this way,students’ direct learning interest(an active voluntary motive for learning)is evoked by teachers naturally.(Ⅱ)Memory Laws.For English learning,mechanical memory is students’ main form of memory with the comprehensive memory,motor memory and emotional memory improving gradually until various sense organs work in coordination.Only until the acquired information has been made meaningful,will it not last for long in a student’s memory.(III)Learning Orientation.On the basis of their psychological characteristics and memory laws,teachers should foster,strengthen and develop students English learning interest.We can say that the process for students to learn English is one of fighting with their learning interest which is likely to diminish.
  Secondly,teachers should have pertinent qualities before they can conduct the college English teaching successfully.Undoubtedly,students is the center of the teaching,but teacher should be the leader of the center,the nature of college students ’ English teaching require that those engaged in teaching English should possess such qualities as unusual creative powers,exceptional demonstration ability,remarkable professional proficiency and have deep love for the teaching career.Here,demonstration plays two roles.One is in learning.Including teacher’s pronunciation,intonation,speaking speed,etc.They will influence students strongly and lastingly.That suggests an college English teacher should be role accurate in demonstration and easy in English thinking.The other role is demonstration in cultures and customs when they teach the language of English.Teachers ought to impart to students the excellent cultures unique customs and personal characters in western countries including various ways of conducting oneself in society,all sorts of body language and the keen sense of punctuality and so on.Outstanding proficiencying in one’s specialty is a basic quality that every qualified teacher should have.A college English teacher must be excellent at all those aspects as pronunciation,grammar,oral English,English listening and English writing.That is to say,teacher should study continuously to improve her professional level and go deep into teaching material assiduously; have teaching prevision ability,guiding ability,and an ability of meeting contingencies.In addition,the teacher must have deep love for this career.Can you imaging a teacher without a deep love for education will devote his heart and soul to education? It is especially for English teacher,who should always remember the importance of what they are doing.Don’t let even one student lag behind.Whenever you are facing students,please make sure you are full of genuine love and with child like innocence and try your best to help them swim into the wonderful English world and eagerly find out the mystery of English on their own initiative.
