[Objective] The research aimed to study the concentration of formaldehyde and ozone in newly-renovated classrooms and the ability of plants to purify polluting gases under open conditions. [Method] Taking a university in Shaanxi Province as an example, a total of 12 sample classrooms were selected on the 8th floor of the newly renovated teaching building and the 9th floor of the teaching building. The formaldehyde and ozone concentrations were monitored by a portable intelligent gas detector. The monitoring sites were monitored for 1 h every day from 07:00 to 08:00 and from 21:00 to 22:00 for continuous monitoring for 30 days. The average level of monitoring sites was the concentration of formaldehyde and ozone at that point. [Results] The formaldehyde concentration in two teaching buildings was much lower than the national standard value. The concentrations of ozone were almost the same as those of the national standard, and fluctuated above the standard value. Formaldehyde levels were higher in the morning than in the evening, while ozone levels were higher in the evening than in the morning. On the eighth floor of the teaching building, three green plants, ivy and spider plants were placed in the three sample classrooms. In the other three sample plants, plants were not placed. After one month, the comparison results showed that the concentrations of formaldehyde in the three classrooms with plants were significantly higher reduce. [Conclusion] The concentration of formaldehyde and ozone in newly-renovated classrooms will not cause harm to the teachers and students’ bodies. In the same open space, the purifying effect of plants on indoor formaldehyde is obvious.
