  - Passage 1 -
Computers are good tools. The Internet is also good. But some people spend too much time online. They can’t stop. Doctors say this is a new sickness. They call this sickness Internet Addiction Disorder (互联网成瘾症)(IAD).
People with IAD are online a lot. They spend hours chatting to their friends or playing online games. Many people with IAD spend more time on the Internet than with family or friends. Some people with IAD even quit (辞掉) their jobs!
Do you have IAD? Think about these questions: How many hours a day are you online? Is it a lot or a little? When you are not online, are you thinking about playing a computer game or checking your messages? When you are online, do you forget the time? Do you get angry when you can’t play a game?
If you have IAD, what can you do? Dr. Ivan Goldberg and Dr. Kimberly S. Young have some ideas. First, ask yourself “Why am I online a lot?” Then try to take a break. For example, use the computer or play games twice a week, not every day. In this way, you can have a good social life with other friends.

  - Passage 2 -
To write a great news story, you have to make sure it is correct, relevant (相关的) and fresh.
For a start, all the information in a story must be correct. Not only the spelling and grammar, but also the facts.
Any mistakes that appear (出现) in a story can get a newspaper into big trouble.
For example, if a newspaper said that Yang Liwei was the first man to go into space, it would be wrong. He wasn’t the first. The newspaper would probably lose lots of readers because of that mistake.
A news story is not only correct, but also relevant to its readers. People are mostly interested in news that happens near to them. That is why you care more about what happens at your school than at American schools. It is also why newspapers in Beijing don’t talk about much news in Shanghai or Hong Kong.
Finally, news must always be fresh. When you pick up your evening newspaper, you want to read about news that happens that day. You don’t want to read about news from last week!
So, now you know what makes a good news story. Have a good look at our newspaper and see if it is full of good news. You can try writing a news story for our newspaper like a real reporter.
( )1. The writer mentions _______ main factors (因素) to make a news story really great.
  A. two B. three
  C. four D. five
( )2. According to the second paragraph, the correct information in a story includes _______.
  A. translation and facts
  B. spelling and pronunciation
  C. spelling, grammar and facts
  D. listening to English more can help
  you realize your dream
( )3. According to the writer, newspaper in Liaocheng should talk much about news in _______.
  A. Liaocheng
  B. Hong Kong
  C. Shanghai
  D. Beijing
( )4. Which of the following is TRUE?
  A. A small mistake can’t get a news-
  paper into trouble.
  B. A lot of people like reading about
  news from last week.
  C. The passage doesn’t tell us who was the first man to go into space. D. People are mostly interested in news that happens far away from them.
( )5. The passage mainly talks about _______.
  A. why to be a good reporter
  B. where to find interesting news
  C. when to choose a good newspaper
  D. how to write a great news story
  - Passage 1 -
Last month when I was taking part in a US college interview, I was asked, “what makes you special? ” In fact I had answered questions like this many times since I decided to go to college. In the US, college paid special attention to different achieve-ment. For example, a person who is very good at math can go to a famous college but also can be a good football player. This experience made me think again that I must try to find where my own interests might lead me. To be honest, it was not easy. However, I never felt sorry to choose this way because it helped me understand myself. If I took the College Entrance Examination, as we call it gaokao in China, it could never possibly do.
When I entered high school, I took gaokao seriously because it seemed to me a great way to show how good at my lessons. However, as I grew older, I realized gaokao did make me work hard at my lessons, but the pressure also pushed many other activities out of my life, like guitar―playing. Although I had no time for it, I will still get to it in the future .
No doubt, gaokao provides a way of choosing those who are successful in their studies. But it is really important for all of us to rethink what “talent” really is today. This is because we now live in a world in which all of our other human qualities (品质) are needed for success, not just the high grade.
Ken Robinson once said, “the society depends on different kinds of talents.” However, gaokao pays too much attention to a person’s grades but little to his other qualities. And it is these qualities that make life colorful and fun.
As high school students, we can not change the present situation of eduction, but we are always free to think outside of the box. Although good school grade is still useful, I hope one day we will see our education also welcome the amazing possibilities in different people.
( )1. The US College pay special attention to ________.
  A. students’ family background
  B. the different achievement
  C. students’ ideas about way of life
  D. the school a student is from
( )2. When at high school, the writer ________.
  A. had a lot of activities
  B. did not work hard at her lessons
  C. did well in gaokao
  D. had no time to play the guitar
( )3. From the passage, we know that the writer may ________.
  A. go to college in America
  B. give up the US college interview
  C. become a good football player in the US
  D. change the present situation of
  eduction
( )4. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
  A. My School Life Abroad.
  B. Different Exams in the US.
  C. My View on Gaokao.
  D. The Importance of School Grades.
  - Passage 2 -
At East China University of Science and Technology, students will get a coupon (优惠券) if they eat up their food. Students can collect coupons and exchange them for small gifts, such as books, magazines, mobile phone covers and hand warmers. “It’s been such a surprise,” said Liang Zhaoyun, 19, a student at the university in Shanghai. “It has given us one more motivation to finish our food.”
The measure is part of a national “eat-up” campaign (行动) which is organized by students to deal with food waste on campuses (校园).
Why only on campuses, you might ask? Because according to a report by Xinhna News Agency, students waste twice as much food as the national average (平均).
The campaign on campus food waste is receiving attention across the country.
“The aim of the campaign is not only to encourage students to finish their food. We hope it can also encourage students to choose a more environment-friendly and
healthy lifestyle,” said Tao Siliang, secretary of the Youth League Committee at Shanghai University.
But some school food is poorly prepared, so students do not like to finish it all. Some schools have taken notice of this and they are taking measures to improve it.
“I’m glad that we’ve reduced food waste since the ‘eat-up’ campaign began. But if we call on students to waste less food, we should also improve the service and food standard on campuses.” said Tao.
( )1. From Paragraph l, we know that the students will get a coupon ________.
  A. when they eat school food B. after they exchange gifts
  C. if they finish all their food D. if they collect the waste
