英国作家朱莉亚·克劳奇的小说《不速之客》从第三人称叙述者和露丝的视角讲述了她的好朋友波莉因丈夫车祸去世,带着两个儿子入住露丝的“乡村小屋”后,利用露丝的善良与救赎心理,蓄意消融和破坏露丝用心维持的生活秩序,别有用心地与露丝的丈夫加雷斯发生不伦之恋。露丝通过种种迹象证实了波莉鹊巢鸠占的企图,故事却以丈夫加雷斯的意外身亡而告终。小说中,“不速之客”波莉与露丝对家庭生活、婚恋性事、舐犊情深等若干领域的相互侵蚀和疯狂掠夺,是作者对西方现代社会高度异化现状的文学表述。小说以丰厚的主题思想、多重人物性格的立体塑造、灵活多变的艺术形式,凸现出现代主义小说典型的审美特征。

The novel highlights the typical aesthetic features of modernist novels with generous themes, three-dimensional shaping of multiple characters and flexible and varied forms of art.
