Objective To investigate the relationship between alcohol intake and hypertension among males in urban and rural areas of Guangxi. Methods The data of Guangxi Nutrition and Health Survey in 2002 were used. The survey adopted a multistage stratified cluster random sampling method, in which 1 322 men and women aged 15 years and over in urban and rural areas were drawn in 4 cities and 4 counties, respectively, for urban and rural residents Medical examination, alcohol consumption and behavioral factors; and using Logistic regression analysis for multivariate analysis. Results The prevalence rate of hypertension in urban and rural men aged 15 and over was 278, of which 21.8% were hypertension. Among them, the prevalence of male was 22.8% in rural areas and 19.2% in urban areas (P> 0.05). Male residents’ drinking rate was 50.07% in rural areas and 44.05% in urban areas. The total alcohol intake of male residents in rural areas was 20.07 ± 40.06g / d, slightly higher than that of male urban residents (15.37 ± 50.45g / d) (P> 0.05). With the increase of alcohol intake, the prevalence of hypertension in urban and rural men showed a significant increase trend. Non-conditional logistic regression analysis showed that male urban residents had alcohol consumption≥25.0g / d, rural≥50.0g / d, hypertension (control group), hypertension The prevalence was higher than never drinking group (P <0.05). Conclusions Alcohol intake ≥25.0g / d and ≥50.0g / d are respectively independent risk factors for hypertension in urban and rural men in Guangxi.
