调频立体声是在调频单声广播的基础上发展起来的,它不仅具有调频广播信噪比高、抗干扰能力强、频带宽、音质好、设备简单、频率可以复用等优点,而且还兼有低频立体声的特点,使重放出来的声音具有立体感.立体声广播使人坐在家里犹如坐在大剧场里欣赏大型交响乐或戏剧的演出,给人以一种身临其境的真实感.在1941年发明了调频广播的基础上,1961年在美国首先实现了调频立体声广播,不久,很多国家的音乐节目广播都实现了调频立体声化,有的国家还建成了遍布全国的调频立体声广播网,并正在向四声道和全景声立体声方向发展.
