Since the French National Space Center brought Earth observation satellite SPOT-1 into orbit in February 1986, the French government has maintained long-term enthusiasm for the SPOT program. In August 1989, the French government allocated an additional 200 million francs in its fiscal year 1990 budget to step up its construction of the fourth SPOT commercial remote sensing satellite. Such a decision is particularly valuable at the moment when the U.S. land-satellite program is at a standstill. By the end of this century, the SPOT satellite will become the most important remote sensing satellite in the world and be applied by all countries.
