南京盲人植物园位于中山植物园的南园,南濒前湖,北倚钟山,东接明孝陵神道,西望廖仲恺墓,占地1.2万平方米。1998年建成时,是国内唯一的专为盲人兴建的植物园,目前仍是国内最大的盲人植物园。盲人,是芸芸众生中之不幸者。尤其是那些与生俱来或幼年失明的盲人,终生生活在无边的黑暗里。就连自己的生身父母、同胞骨肉都无法看到,更何况太阳、月亮,蓝天、白云,高山、大海,动物、植物,千姿百态、精彩纷呈的世界!但是,盲人有敏锐的感觉,聪慧善思的头脑,可以通过触摸嗅闻和言传而领悟周围环境,感应周围的动物和植物,开阔思想和生活空间,增加生活情趣,感受大自然的伟大赋予。1998年5月1日,南京盲人植物园落成剪彩。其时,笔者正在中科院植物研究所作访问研究工作,有幸在场。因此走访了该所研究员、当时任所长的贺善安先生。
