Copper has long been known for its place in human health. Some experts advocate even promoting health by eating more copper-containing foods. However, researchers from Duke University School of Medicine reported in a recent issue of Nature that cancers that carry a mutation in the BRAF gene require copper to promote tumor growth. This means that some cancers driven by BRAF mutations, such as malignant melanoma, thyroid cancer, lung cancer and the like, play an important role in the development and progression of copper. At the same time, it also means that copper-lowering drugs will benefit the treatment of these tumors. Copper is a trace element necessary for the human body, common in the food supply
